Detik Detik Ujian Nasional is a
preparation book designed for 9 grade and 12 grade. This book contains brief
review of materials, sample questions, discussion of sample questions, tryouts,
predictions, and also tips in facing final exam related to the subject of
lesson.
There are several activities going
on judging from the cover; introducing, persuading, and convincinng. From a
glance, the publisher put the picture of senior high school students as a mean
to introduce that this book was purposively made for senior high school level
and stated in written form ‘untuk SMA/MA program IPA/ IPS/ Bahasa/ Keagamaan’. They
introduced this book further by putting the title ‘Detik-Detik Ujian Nasional
Bahasa Inggris Tahun Pelajaran 2014/ 2015’ into circle. By putting it to the
title and having the biggest font size, they expected that customer will notice
the title first than any other written information on the cover.
Next; the publisher persuaded
customer indirectly. On the layout, there are five students holding trophies
and certificate, and smiling in a relaxing atmosphere. After the customer read
the title, they will see those students. The photos of those students, will
trigger an imagination in customer’s mind that they will likely to have certain
achievement after they buy the book. The persuasion was conveyed further by
putting the features of the book next to the book’s title. ‘Materi, aplikasi,
dan soal pendalaman, empat paket soal tryout Ujian Nasional 2014/ 2015, empat
paket soal prediksi Ujian Nasional 2014/ 2015’were put in white area in order
to make it visible.
After being persuaded, the
customer will be convinced through the photos, color composition, and some
written form information. The photos shows five smiling students and one of
them gives thumb up. Those gestures combine with three trophies and a
certificate that they hold, show satisfaction about outstanding achievement,
especially in academic field. Eventhough there are no trophies for making
achievement in national exam, the publisher put some trophies to give a strong
notion on successful academic achievement in the photo. The publisher also
wanted to convince that this book is suitable to every students by choosing
models students in the photo wearing casual shoes. Despite of that, three of
the girls are wearing skirt above their knee as a symbol of casual, fun, and
big city students. By having them as a models, the publisher wanted to convince
that buying this book will help every students to be like them – casual modern
students who are happy having academic achievement. Another way to convince the
customer is by setting the classroom with certain color in the photo. Classroom
background reflect academic intention. There are some main color supporting in
convincing the customer such as brown, golden yellow, and grey. Brown is a sign
of reliability, peace, productivity, practice, and hard work. Golden yellow
shows warmth, enthusiasm, friendship, business achievement, carrier, happiness,
and independency. Meanwhile, grey shows security, intellengency, calm, serious,
humble, mature and quality. The colors combinations are related to the photos
to build happiness, friendship, productivity, achievement athmosphere in the
book cover. After putting such color, the publisher strengthened to convince
the customer by putting the authors’ name and the publisher name on front
cover. The authors’ name may give big influence to customer, especially
teachers who are sharp in observing book quality based on the authors. The
publisher name, ‘Intan Pariwara’, is one of several remarkable academic publisher.
By stating it in front cover, the publisher wanted to convince the customer
further.
There are several institution that
being involved such as the publisher, educational institution, and government.
The publisher plays a role as the institution who help the authors to multiply
and to distribute their book. Not only that, the publisher also plays a role as
advertiser the product itself. The next institution is school or in general it
can be students, teacher, or people who cares for educaction. Their roles
toward the product are as customer and also reviewer. Success or not, it is
depend on their judgement. The last institution is the government itself. The
government plays a role as a policy maker in educational systems. Any change in
the education policy will affect certain or every product related to education,
for example this book. Any update of educational policy will likely be mentioned
in the front cover to show the appropriateness of the book and to fulfill the
customer’s need.
A relation between those
institution can be inferred from the cover. Government as the policy maker has
the highest position among the others institution- the publisher and educational
institution. Any change in education policy, will be responded by the publisher
by revising their old product or accomodating it in new product and will be
followed by the educational institution. So the relation between the government
and the others is vertical relationship. While the publisher and educational
instituition is in form of horizontal line. The publisher provided the needs’of
educational institution and accept the feedback from them towards the products.
The last is the role of the
language in the cover. The role of language in the cover are as persuasion
tools. There are many written information from the title of the book, the
content of the book, the target reader of the book, the authors’ name, and the
publisher’s name. By giving clear explanation about the detail of the book, the
publisher wanted to establish a trustworthy assumption in consumer’s mind. The
assumption then combined with the designed cover layout creating a persuassive
and convincing image that the book is the one they need to achieve success in
national exam.
